Open Learning Support for Mathematical Education for Engineers

Becoming a HELM User
  • Using HELM Mathematics Resources for Engineering Students

HELM learning resources have been extensively trialled here at Loughborough University to teach mathematics to several thousand engineering students over a number of years. HELM trials have taken place at over 20 HEIs in the UK and list of HELM users is available here. Users outside Loughborough has increased as new materials are being developed.

We offer HE institutions the opportunity to use HELM resources. You can use them to support the teaching of a complete mathematics module, or part of it, to engineering students. Alternatively your students can use the resources for independent learning.

    Registered HELM users can:

    Please note:
    • Higher Education Institutes in England and Northern Ireland can access all the HELM learning resources - free.
    • We are at the moment looking at ways to make HELM learning resources available free of charge to other institutions. Let us know if you are interested in using our resources and we will let you know in due course how to access them for free.
    • We do not provide our resources for individual use. Students should contact us via an academic of their institute (university/College)

    What Can HELM Provide?

    The
HELM project can support your teaching of mathematics to engineering students through :

    • PDF files of all 50 HELM Workbooks so that institutions can prepare their own student copies.
    • Access to the HELM Computer Aided Learning (CAL) web area.
    • The HELM Computer Aided Assessments (CAA) question database and associated image and template files for those institutions that have access to Question Mark Perception (QMP) software.
    • Sample stand-alone (PC based) computer aided assessments which which do not require QMP software.
    • Advice on Computer Aided Assessments (CAA).
    • Visits: A member of the project team can visit you to demonstrate HELM materials or you can visit the HELM project team at Loughborough and see the resources.
